Just an update on the SS United States for those that are trying to get some photos of it leaving Philadelphia. They made an announcement on a tentative move date.
Nov. 14, 2024: Tugboats will attach to the SS United States around 11:45 a.m. (high tide) and guide her from Pier 82 to Pier 80, where she’ll stay temporarily until the next low tide. Reason for this is that she actually only floats during high tide in her current spot. When it’s not high tide, it actually rests on the muck under the water.
Nov. 15, 2024: In the pre-dawn hours, the tugboats will begin maneuvering the vessel into the Delaware River as low tide approaches (estimated at 6:59 a.m.).
The Walt Whitman, Commodore Barry, and Delaware Memorial bridges will all be temporary closed to allow her to safely pass under the bridges. Going to be a traffic nightmare in Philly. This is being done at low tide as the main stacks would not have enough clearance to pass under the Walt Whitman.
(update: Contrary to earlier reports, officials from the Delaware River and Bay Authority have confirmed that the Delaware Memorial Bridge will remain open when the iconic SS United States passes underneath it on November 15, 2024.)
It will head down the Delaware river to the Delaware bay and out to the Atlantic Ocean. Since it will no longer be going to Virginia and is now going to Alabama, the estimated Journey is 2 weeks.
